The theme for Black History Month 2022 is February and Forever: Celebrating Black History today and every day. It’s an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of the Black community and reflect on experiences and accomplishments. So all month we’re highlighting some of the iconic black artists who’ve changed rock n’ roll.

Today we take a look at American Rock Band: Living Colour

From the Big Apple, New York City, Living Colour was formed in 1984. Currently, the band consists of guitarist Vernon Reid, lead vocalist Corey Glover, drummer Will Calhoun, and bassist Doug Wimbish (who replaced Muzz Skillings in 1992). Based on the style of their music, the band incorporates heavy metal, funk, jazz, hip hop, punk, and alternative rock influences. The lyrics of the band range from the personal to the political, with social commentary on racism in the United States.

With six studio albums under their belt so far: “Vivid”, “Time’s Up”, “Stain”, “Collideøscope”, “The Chair in the Doorway”, “Shade”, the band rose to fame with their debut album Vivid in 1988 but they would be best known for their rock anthem “Cult of Personality”. This song would lead them to a Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance and Best Rock Album “Time’s Up” in 1990.

The band would disband in 1995 after failing to settle on common musical goals for their fourth studio album. Living Colour would reform in 2000 and go on to tour ever since. The band is currently working on new material for their seventh studio album.
