After Michael McDonald rejoined the Doobie Brothers in 2019 for the band’s 50th-anniversary tour, fans have eagerly awaited news of new music. Now, it’s official: the iconic group, along with McDonald, is recording their first album together in over four decades since 1980’s “One Step Closer.”

Guitarist and vocalist Patrick Simmons took to Facebook to share the exciting update, stating, “We are very close to finishing an album’s worth of new songs.” He expressed his enthusiasm for the project, calling it “some of the best music we’ve ever made together” and hinted at a potential release in the Spring or Summer.

In a recent interview with Billboard, Simmons and co-founder Tom Johnston provided further insights into the upcoming album. They revealed that the record, produced by John Shanks, features a gospel-influenced track titled “Walk This Way,” featuring vocals from the legendary Mavis Staples.

While the album is nearing completion, Simmons noted that it is about “half, maybe 60 percent” finished in terms of arrangements. Reflecting on the genesis of the project amidst the 50th-anniversary tour, Johnston explained, “Those things just start. They just sorta happen. This whole band has been like that; things just happen through the years — songs, albums.”

Simmons emphasized the joy of creating music with McDonald back in the fold, praising the collective talent and camaraderie within the band. He remarked, “It’s as strong now as it ever was,” highlighting the enduring legacy of the Doobie Brothers and their unwavering commitment to delivering exceptional music to their fans.
